SHURUGWI – Shurugwi Town Council is planning to demolish midhadhadha; one roomed flats in Makusha Suburb that have always been an eyesore because of their poor standard.
Shurugwi Mayor, Fanuel Machiya confirmed this in an interview with The Mirror.
The 25 blocks of flats with 142 single rooms were built in 1967 and they use communal toilets and bath facilities. Occupants will be moved to another place and only brought back after the construction of new houses.
He said Council will use its own funds for the project should a resolution be passed.
Currently starting from January this year residents are paying US$ 40 per month since they have been paying US$ 12 per month.
“These flats were built using mud bricks. We want to modernize the town and bring some beauty so we are planning on demolishing the flats and build four-roomed houses for each family. We need to make the town more habitable for all our residents. Houses should be free from transmittable diseases and midhadhadha always pose risks for cholera,” said Machiya.
Ward 8 Councillor Tarisai Kupakuwana who is the housing committee chairperson said they liked the idea after seeing the same in Zvishavane.
Emilia Ndlovu, a resident hailed the local authority for the move and described midhadhadha accommodation as subhuman.
